It's not what we don't know that gets us into so much trouble; it's what we know that ain't so. --Josh Billings If a million people believe a foolish thing, it's still a foolish thing. --Anatole
REQUIRED READING BEFORE BEGINNING
THESE WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS: A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep. --Saul Bellow PAGE CONTENTS The purpose of these assignments is to strengthen your critical thinking skills and to help you discover that what you think you know isn't always so. Every Friday until the end of the semester you will be turning in a one paragraph response to one of the articles/essays found on one of the Web sites listed under "Sites for Assignments." Pick articles/essays about topics that interest you. Do not focus your comments on the web site itself. Your paragraph should be a half page long. React in this paragraph to what you have read. Avoid the temptation to write a multi-page essay. Do you agree or disagree with all or some of an articles content? Why? Is there something you would like to add? Perhaps there are some additional concerns you would like addressed by the articles author. Do not use the same web site every week for these assignments. If you turn in all of these assignments, you will receive an "A" grade that will be the equivalent of an "A" on a 1000 word essay. Miss two, and your grade will be a "B"; miss four, a "C." You can figure out the rest. Be sure to include in the upper right-hand corner the Web sites
name and URL.
It is the mark of an educated
mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. No matter how cynical you
become, it's never enough to keep up.
